What’s New on 79th Street & Biscayne: November 2026
Welcome to our first monthly roundup of what’s changing around NE 79th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. This month the news is mostly about food: a rotisserie in MiMo, a Filipino restaurant in Little River and a Haitian bakery in Miami Shores. There’s also roadwork on the boulevard and a step forward for commuter rail. Sources are linked throughout, and schedules shift, so check before you go.
New in MiMo: Teo Teo and Pizza Tropical
The newest arrival on the boulevard is Teo Teo, a Venezuelan rotisserie at 7285 Biscayne Blvd from the team at Caracas Bakery, which sits right next door. The Infatuation put it on its October Hit List of new restaurants and describes a short menu built for takeout, the kind of place that earns its keep if you live nearby.
A few blocks south, Pizza Tropical has settled in at 7010 Biscayne Blvd, next to Dogma. It began as a window at Gramps in Wynwood, and Miami New Times reported that it moved north this year after Gramps closed in December. Its daytime and early-evening schedule was designed around the neighborhood, so check hours before you go.
Both are an easy add-on to our MiMo District walking guide, which covers the same stretch of Biscayne.
Little River’s busy block of NE 2nd Avenue
Just north of 79th Street, the 8200 block of NE 2nd Avenue had a big fall. Anako opened at 8222 NE 2nd Ave with modern Filipino cooking from chef-owners Leicel Ros and Nancy Dominguez, according to Time Out Miami. The Infatuation notes that the team previously ran the pop-up Sili.
A few doors up, Taquiza now operates at 8246 NE 2nd Ave. The Infatuation reports that both of its Miami Beach locations have closed, so Little River is where to find it. There’s no indoor seating, just takeout and a few patio tables.
Still to come on the same block is Bar Fideo, a Spanish tapas spot at 8291 NE 2nd Ave from Ivan Barros and Caroline Strauss of Magie Wine Bar. It was listed for late 2026 in The Infatuation’s fall preview, so watch for an opening date.
A rum distillery opens near NW 71st Street
On the west side of Little River, Little River Distillery has opened at 73 NW 71st St. WSVN described a 22,000-square-foot rum distillery and aging house with a tasting room, a speakeasy and guided tours, and Time Out Miami listed its grand opening for Oct. 16. It’s a short drive from Biscayne and a different kind of night out from the neighborhood’s restaurant row. Check tour times and book ahead.
La Paix Bakery comes to Miami Shores
Up NE 2nd Avenue, La Paix Bakery held a grand opening on Oct. 27 for its new shop at 9636 NE 2nd Ave in Miami Shores. The Haitian bakery’s new 3,200-square-foot café has indoor and outdoor seating, with baked goods, savory pastries, traditional sweets and comfort meals, according to Soul of Miami.
Roadwork on Biscayne Boulevard
If your commute feels slower, here’s why. The Florida Department of Transportation has two jobs underway or wrapping up on the boulevard.
The first is a $3.6 million safety project at NE 72nd Street, NE 74th Street, the 8300 block and NE 85th Street, plus NE 18th Street downtown. FDOT plans new signalized midblock crossings, pedestrian signals, curb ramps, repaving and changes to some parking spaces. Construction was scheduled to start in August and finish in early 2027, with lanes and sidewalks closing during midday, non-peak hours.
The second is a $6 million repaving and sidewalk job running north from NE 61st Street to NE 6th Avenue. It began in October 2025, and FDOT’s project page listed completion for fall 2026. Further north, a separate project from NE 6th Avenue to NE 105th Street is in design and includes a new crosswalk at NE 91st Street. Weekly lane closures are posted at southflroads.com.
Seawall work planned for Shorecrest
The City of Miami’s Shorecrest seawall project is worth a look if you live on the water. The roughly $3.7 million job covers three spots: NE 64th Street at the bay, NE 84th Street at the Ademar Canal, and North Bayshore Drive at the Davis Canal. It includes new and raised seawalls, tidal valves, drainage work and repaving. The city’s page estimates construction from winter 2026 through summer 2027 and notes that the timeline may change.
Commuter rail clears a funding hurdle
The biggest transit story of the month is the Northeast Corridor, the planned commuter train from downtown Miami to Aventura along the Florida East Coast Railway tracks. WLRN reported on Oct. 22 that the state has put $200 million back into its five-year plan, which leaves the $927 million project funded on paper. Negotiations with Brightline are still open, though, and the county mayor’s office says the current proposal doesn’t meet its standard.
For this neighborhood, the detail to know is that no 79th Street stop appears on the list. The planned new stations are Wynwood, the Design District, Little Haiti, North Miami and FIU’s Biscayne Bay campus. Little Haiti is the closest of those to us. The county’s fact sheet targets service in 2032.
Also on our radar
Three more things to watch this winter:
- Little River District: The Real Deal reports that Michael Swerdlow’s $3 billion, 64-acre plan is moving ahead, with 5,730 affordable and workforce homes planned, the county housing department leaving its building at 7217 NE Miami Court, and construction targeted for early 2027.
- Luca Trattoria: Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli’s sister restaurant to Luca Osteria is headed to 933 Normandy Dr, just across the 79th Street Causeway. It was announced for this fall, and we couldn’t confirm an opening yet.
- 79th Street bridges: FDOT’s study of replacing the causeway bridges held its public hearing in May 2024. Its page says design follows the study but doesn’t list a construction date.
On the closing side, Miami New Times reported that The Love Loaf bakery set Sept. 30 as its last day at 7415 Collins Ave. Its owner plans to reopen at 7337 Collins Ave in the first half of 2027.
